歐鴻鍊大使，是外交部第一位西班牙語系出身的外交部長。
以英文專長進入外交部的歐鴻鍊，因外派秘魯，認真自學西班牙語，返國後被選任為蔣中正總統與蔣經國行政院長的西語傳譯。其後多次派駐西語系國家，長達四十五年的職業外交官生涯，可說是一部我國與中南美洲國家的外交史。
歐鴻鍊的回憶錄從近身經驗出發，深刻描繪第一線外交工作人員在他國異鄉致力爭取國家利益的艱辛歷程，道盡外交官家眷為外交工作所付出的心血與犧牲。不僅有外交折衝的歷史紀錄，也有人情世故的溫暖互動。
