【我與菲律賓明星總統艾斯特拉達如夫人基婭高美仕的故事】

一九八六我初次外放菲律賓時，電影明星出身的艾斯特拉達(Joseph E. Estrada)仍擔任參議員，之前任馬尼拉仙範市長。我曾隨劉宗翰大使前往其寓所拜訪。
眾人皆知艾氏風流，有多位夫人，其大老婆為醫生不問政事，其二夫人基婭高美仕(Gia Gomez) 女士則係商人，活潑大方、襄贊政務，然尚未謀面。直到有一天菲律賓聖道拓瑪仕大學(University of Santo Tomas)校長約我午餐，我欣然赴約，在座另一女士即為基婭高美仕，惟校長並未介紹其背景。時為一九九零秋，離隔年總統大選還有半年多，但在媒體上，艾參議員被視為極有潛力且是常被討論的熱門人選之一。聖校校長雖然是神父，但對菲國政治亦非常關心，因此剛坐定沒多久校長就問我對菲國幾位侯選人的看法。很自然地我提到了艾參議員知名度很高，缺點是學歷不高，又反美軍基地續留菲律賓，以及妻妾太多形象欠佳是其弱點。
我話講完，校長對我眨眨眼，笑著問說「你知道你身旁的基婭女士是誰嗎？」，我馬上了解到她是參議員的女人之一，我立即表示歉意，而基婭也大方表示完全不介意，並同意我說的是實情。其後我常與她有往來，她在其豪宅舉辦生日宴會也邀我參加，甚至後來艾氏不選總統而改選副總統也是參考我的意見，尤其艾氏與艾奎諾的堂兄許環哥(Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr.)搭擋選正副總統也是我居間促成。艾參議員一九九一年當選副總統，基婭女士還特別到台北來當面向我道謝。
