【李前總統在康乃爾大學的「可樂」事件】

大家都知道，在外交工作裡面，語言是最重要的一環。經常在溝通的時候，因為用語沒有適當表達，而造成的許多尷尬的情況。
1995年李登輝總統訪問康乃爾大學(Cornell University)，當時我是駐美代表處政治組組長，負責全部行程及後勤支援工作，全組的同仁忙得不可開交。
還記得李總統第一站是到康乃爾大學的農學院，也就是他的母系。當時有一個簡單但是隆重的歡迎儀式，安排李總統要上台致詞，當李總統到達的時候，就立刻被所有歡迎的學校師長及安全人員團團圍住，我們工作的同仁只能在外圍。
我還記得忽然之間，裡面傳出聲音，說總統需要一瓶可樂，要我們立刻送進去，但是誰都沒有想到總統在這個時候需要可樂！
當時為了安全考慮，所有附近的宿舍、教室都大門深鎖，當然也找不到販賣機，只看到安全人員都很急忙地叫我們趕快拿一瓶可樂來！
這個時候我立刻打電話給在工作室坐鎮的徐佩勇秘書，也就是現在的外交部國際組織司徐司長。我告訴他：你什麼也別問，趕快抓一瓶可樂跑步到農學院來！
10分鐘之後，我看到徐司長氣喘喘的拿著一瓶可樂跑過來，但已經太晚了，李總統已經上台開始演講！
事後，很多人納悶，李總統從來不喝可樂，為什麼會臨時需要一瓶可樂？
經過我們跟安全人員詢問，才恍然大悟。原來李總統是說他「口渴」，需要一瓶水，但身旁的人聽成要一瓶「Coke」，一轉身就告訴我們要一瓶可口可樂！
這是一個真實的故事！

【Lee Qian President "Coke" incident at Cornell University 】

Everyone knows that language is the most important part of diplomacy. Often when communicating, many awkward situations caused by the lack of proper expression in the language.
In 1995 Lee Teng-Hing President visited Cornell University. At that time I was the head of the political team of the representative office in the United States, responsible for all the itinerary and logistics support. The team was too busy.
Remember Lee President first stop was to Cornel University's Agricultural College, his mother department. There was a simple but grand welcome ceremony, arranged for Lee President to speak on stage. When Li President arrived, he was immediately surrounded by all the welcome school teachers and security staff. Our colleagues at work were only on the outside.
I still remember suddenly a voice came out saying President needed a bottle of Coke and asked us to deliver it right away, but nobody thought President needed a Coke at this time!
At that time, for safety reasons, all the nearby dormitory and classroom doors were locked, and of course, I couldn't find a vending machine. I only saw that the security staff were in a hurry to get us a bottle of Coke
At this time, I immediately called Secretary Xu Peyong, who is sitting in the studio, now Director Xu of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs I told him: don't ask anything, grab a bottle of Coke and run to the Agricultural College!
10 minutes later, I saw Chief Xu come in panting with a bottle of Coke, but it was too late, Li President was on stage to start his speech!
Afterwards, many people wonder, Lee President never drank cola, why would need a bottle of cola temporarily?
After we asked the security staff, we realized it. It turns out that Lee President said he was "thirsty" and needed a bottle of water, but the person next to him heard that he wanted a bottle of "Coke" and told us to have a bottle of Coca-Cola as soon
