【聯合報╱記者劉俐珊╱即時報導】馬哈迪是馬來西亞任期最長的總理，長達廿二年，是馬來西亞現代化推手，主辦單位透露，他以往只過境台灣，此行是他首度來台，他今天應對外關係協會邀請，以「國家建構【編按：民族國家的建構】與經濟發展－馬來西亞經驗」為題發表專題演講。
談到自由貿易，馬哈迪提到台灣、馬來西亞經貿往來密切，雙方已啟動簽署經濟合作協定的前置作業，展開可行性研究，對於何時可望簽署，他未正面回應。雖然馬哈迪提到馬來西亞不認同ＴＰＰ，但也表示他看好東南亞國家間共識較高，可望明年前如期完成ＲＣＥＰ（區域全面經濟夥伴關係）。
